water

Water related engineering is an area in which Storey ENG (Pty) Ltd has specialist expertize and in which we distinguish ourselves. The particular expertise we have is reflected in the following:

  • Irrigation - We are one of a very select few independent professional consultants with experience to undertake the design, specification and construction monitoring of landscape, turf, sport field and golf course irrigation systems.

  • Pumpstations - In addition to sewer and water pumpstations we have gained much experience in the specialist pumpstations needed for irrigation systems.

  • Dams - Legislation requires that dams be classified into their capacity and wall height. We have suitably experienced engineers who can deal with dams of all sizes, including Category II and III dams which require the appointment of Approved Professional Persons.

  • Water Master Plans - Water is the life blood of most developments. We have developed a number of water resource master plans, particularly for golf courses and equestrian estates.

  • Building Wet Services - More and more clients are seeing the advantages of consultants preparing the designs for building wet services. The benefits of efficiency and cost effectiveness are well known.

University of Stellenbosch

This project to upgrade the irrigation system serving the gardens on the campus is characterized by:

  • The intake being buried below the bed of the Eerste River.

  • The operation of the pumpstation being controlled by demands created by the irrigation system.

  • The irrigation control system being integrated with the energy management system to prevent peak power demand limits being exceeded.

  • The distribution network having to be installed throughout an historical town.

Malgas Dam, Fancourt

Early on in the construction of this dam problems were encountered when it was discovered the site conditions had not been anticipated. Our appointment required that we act as review consultants to:

  • Review the designs.

  • Prepare revised cost estimates.

  • Monitor the further construction of the dam.

  • Adjudicate the final account.

  • Mediate the acceptance of the final account by the various parties involved in the dam.

Spioenkop Dam, Elgin

Following the catastrophic failure of the Kruin Dam our task was to investigate the cause of the failure, to identify remedial measures, and to prepare, let, and oversee the execution of the contract for the repair of the dam.

L'Ormarins, Franschhoek

The development of this estate into a premier facility comprising an equestrian stud, vineyards, wineries, manor houses, and support facilities required in the first instance the preparation of a water master plan, and thereafter the overseeing of the implementation of the recommendations made in the master plan. The aspects covered include:

  • An evaluation of the water sources and the need for augmentation.

  • Dams - existing and proposed.

  • The sufficiency of the water distribution networks.

  • The irrigation of paddocks, vineyards, and landscapes.

  • Potable water supply.

  • Fire water.

  • Specifications for the work to be done on the aforementioned.

This project is ongoing.

Hermanus Golf Course

This golf course is currently being upgraded from 18 to 27 holes. Of note was the requirement that as much of the existing irrigation system be utilized, notwithstanding that a number of the existing holes were being remodelled, in some instances to the extent that the direction of play was being changed.

Bergzicht Plaza, Stellenbosch

A particular difficulty we had to overcome with the design of the wet services for this multi-storey mixed use commercial / residential development was the use of precast floors without screeds. Thus no space was available for any services in the floors and all piping had to be routed in the walls and service ducts.

Tyger Falls, Tyger Valley

The sewer pumpstation serving part of this mixed use commercial / residential development is characterized by its depth and the excavation for the sump having to be made in solid rock within 5m of a water body.
